As businesses grow more dependent on technology and digital data storage, the risk of cyber-attacks increases. And on top of affecting your business, a cyber-attack could also affect your customers if their personal information (addresses, emails, credit card information and more) is compromised or stolen.
And what many people don’t realize is that small businesses are at a greater risk than large businesses. Why? Smaller businesses often don’t have the same IT resources and likely aren’t as protected as larger companies with entire teams of IT professionals.
Fortunately, there are still steps you and your employees can take every day to help reduce the risk of a hack or other form of cybercrime. Here are a few tips to get you started.
- Encourage employees to lock their computers every time they step away from their desks, even if they’re just walking over to the printer. A workstation that is left logged in creates a vulnerability, especially if visitors are in the building.
- When visitors are in the building, ensure that they’re escorted. This prevents them from accessing the network via USB drives, in case they have ill intentions.
- Even if your computer is locked, do not leave non-employees at your desk if you step away. Some forms of malware or keystroke loggers can be installed within seconds.
- Inform your employees of the company’s cyber security policies. When everyone understands security initiatives, they’re much more likely to help protect the company’s digital assets.
Keep your business’ anti-virus software current. Firewalls and other digital security steps should also be taken to offer comprehensive protection. For small businesses, it may be best to bring in IT contractors to set up these protections.
Every action taken at your company helps to boost cyber security. And when you have fewer incidents, you have fewer cyber liability insurance claims. Ask your agent if a lower rate of claims could lead to policy savings.
